Page 1: Before you begin
Thank you for your interest in studying for your PhD with the Compound Semiconductor Manufacturing Centre for Doctoral Training.
The deadline for Round 2 applications is midnight on 3rd Aprily 2023. We will open Round 3 recruiting if we have not received enough quality applicants to fill our places in Round 1 and 2.
You can save this form and complete in stages BUT after you submit you cannot go back to edit or change your answers. Please pay attention to word limits. IMPORTANT - Download and save a copy of your application form directly after you submit your answers - you have only 15 minutes to do this.
Please note: This application (Part 1) is for the studentship, known as an 'Offer of Funding'. You will also need to apply for admission (Part 2), known as an 'Offer to Study', from Cardiff University by completing their institutional application process through SIMs (please see website for details). Some questions may be the same on both forms - make sure you answer all questions on both forms. Note that Part 2 is done at the same time at the Part1 application, not after you hear if you have been shortlisted, otherwise we cannot administer/progress your application.
After completing this form you MUST complete the Part 2 form on the Cardiff University website. You can use the download of this Part 1 form to attach as the personal statement to the Part 2 SIMS form.
After the application closing date a panel will shortlist candidates on the basis of this application form against the following criteria:
- proven academic quality: normally evidenced by an excellent performance at first degree and/or Master’s level, but may also be demonstrated by a record of relevant professional practice;
- research potential: evidenced through application responses and supported by performance in research projects at first degree and/or Master’s level, or another form of dedicated preparation for research;
- personal motivation and commitment: evidenced through application responses, by enthusiasm for the subject area, and in relation to career goals.
All applicants will be informed of the shortlisting outcome by no later than 5pm on 12th April 2023.
If you are shortlisted you will need to attend an interview, by Zoom, on 28th April . We also need you to
- arrange for two referees to send references to the CDT by 5pm on 21 April
- send a copy of your academic transcript(s) by 5pm on 21 April
Note: these forms can be uploaded via the Part 2 SIMS form, but if you have a copy we would prefer you to send it to us direct at semiconductors-cdt@cardiff.ac.uk as well.
Further details will be included in the shortlisting letter.
